Screening for major constituents in the cream of petroleum ether extract from sugar apple seed was carried out using 2 organic solvents , namely chloroform and ethanol as the extracting solvents. The major groups of compounds detected were terpenoids, alkaloids and lactones .Screening for major constituents in the cream containing sugar apple seed extract, by Thin layer chromatography using solvent system of CHCL3 : diethylamine ( 9.5:0.5 ), showed that the chloroform and ethanol extracts of the cream contained 3 and 2 alkaloid positive spots when detected with Dragendorff ,s spray reagent . Both extracts showed similar chromatographic patterns to that of petroleum ether extract of sugar apple seed . Screening for terpenoid- type compounds was carried out using TLC with solvent system of CHCL3 : hexane ( 8:2 ) . Two violet spots were observed with anisaldehyde-sulfuric acid as detecting reagent . Another group of compounds detected was lactones using TLC with solvent system of benzene : ethyl acetate ( 7:3 ). Two fluorescent blue spots were observed when the plate was viewed under UV light at 365 nm. From these results, it would appear that the TLC patterns of terpenoid type compounds may be useful in the quality control of the cream of sugar apple seed extract.
