The Effect of Mallotus repandus (Willd.) Muell.-Arg. on Cytokine Levels

Kwanchai Rattanamanee, Chuthamanee Suthisisang and Noppamas Soonthornchareonnon

-

The stem of Mallotus repandus (Willd.) Muell.-Arg. has been used for musculoskeletal pain in Thai
traditional medicine for many years. The ethanolic extract of the dry stem of M. repandus and bergenin, the major
compound isolated from this plant, were evaluated for their effects on inflammatory cytokine (TNF-£\\, IL-1£] and
IL-10) levels by using human whole blood method. The ethanolic extract exhibited significant reduction in the
proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-£\\ and IL-1£]). In contrast, it induced a significant increase in IL-10 which is an
antiinflammatory cytokine. Bergenin slightly affect the cytokine concentrations. It is concluded that reducing
proinflammatory cytokines, TNF-£\\ and IL-1£], as well as increasing the level of antiinflammatory cytokine IL-10
was one of the mechanisms of the antiinflammatory activity of the ethanolic extract of M. repandus explored in
this study. ÆÉAll rights reserved.
